The mystical or esoteric context aside, prophecy may be a product of advanced cognitive capabilities. A product of balanced left and right brain hemispheric synergy. The result of subconscious non-linear processing.
It would require a general understanding of the logic, physics, impetus, will, intention, and relationship between objects and entities. It would also require the knowledge or neural framework to support conceptual understanding.
There is a third element and that is access to some other type of all pervading infinite intelligence or information source that can supply information not contained within the finite mind and linear consciousness.
It is thought that the pineal gland, which might provide another form of sight might also be involved. It is known to be sensitive to both light and magnetism although it is buried deep within the structure of the brain.
